چکیده

A 77-yr-old woman was admitted to St. Luke's Hospital for repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm. A balloon-tipped, flow-directed pulmonary artery catheter was inserted using a Cordis sheath in the right internal jugular vein after the induction of general anesthesia. She then underwent uneventful repair of the aneurysm and was transferred out of the surgical intensive care unit on the second postoperative day after an uneventful course in the unit. At the time of transfer the pulmonary artery catheter was removed, but the Cordis sheath was left in place. On the fourth postoperative day the Cordis sheath was removed and a dressing of povidone-iodine ointment and 2 x 2 gauze was placed over the wound with a single strip of adhesive tape. Approximately 15 min after the Cordis sheath was removed, she walked to the bathroom, and within moments of standing she complained of feeling dizzy. When she returned from the bathroom the nurse helping her reported that she suddenly collapsed onto the bed and became unresponsive to verbal queries, although she had her eyes open. On telemetry monitoring she was found to

Central venous air embolism without a catheter.

Venous air embolism is a well-recognized complication of central venous catheterization. Although previous reports have documented venous air embolism occurring in a number of ways, including during initial catheterization, when catheters crack or are disconnected, and after catheter removal, no reports mention the possibility of air embolism occurring when a guide wire without a catheter was i...

Re: Cerebral air embolism following removal of central venous catheter.

Cerebral air embolism occurs very seldom as a complication of central venous catheterization. We report a 57-year-old female with cerebral air embolism secondary to removal of a central venous catheter (CVC). The patient was treated with supportive measures and recovered well with minimal long-term injury. The prevention of air embolism related to central venous catheterization is discussed.

Cerebral Air Embolism Following the Removal of a Central Venous Catheter in the Absence of Intracardiac Right-to-Left Shunting

Air embolism following central venous catheter (CVC) removal is a relatively uncommon complication. Despite its rare occurrence, an air embolism can lead to serious outcomes. One of the most fatal complications is cerebral air embolism. We report a case of cerebral air embolism that occurred after the removal of a CVC in a patient with an underlying idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, subcutaneous e...

Massive Paradoxical Air Embolism in Brain Occurring after Central Venous Catheterization: A Case Report

Cerebral air embolism is a rare but fatal complication of central venous catheterization. Here, we report a case of paradoxical cerebral air embolism associated with central venous catheterization. An 85-yr-old man underwent right internal jugular vein catheterization, and became obtunded. Brain MR imaging and CT revealed acute infarction with multiple air bubbles on the side of catheter insert...

Images in cardiovascular medicine. Massive air embolism after central venous catheter removal.

A 66-year-old patient had a left central venous catheter in place for 8 days. The catheter, which had to be removed, was withdrawn while the patient was in a 180° supine position during a Valsalva maneuver, with positive pressure during removal. A massage at the site of puncture was performed for 3 minutes, and a compressive plaster was applied. Several minutes after removal, the patient, still...
